Art Gazdik, Mark Weakland, Gerard Rohlf, Paula Purnell and Tom Valentine

Welcome!

The NewLanders have been researching, singing and recording local roots music for over 15 years. We’ve released two albums, represented Pennsylvania as PennPat artists (Pennsylvania Performing Artists on Tour), performed for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, traveled to Germany three times with the Westmoreland Museum of American Art’s wonderful Born of Fire: Valley of Work collection – and mostly, really enjoyed making music together and sharing it whenever and wherever we can.

Library of Congress, Folklife Center

I recently spent a weekend perusing the wonderful music collection at the Library of Congress’s Folklife Center in Washington D.C. What a place! Even the card catalog is historic, having been build by Pete Seeger’s father, and the research librarians are amazing! I was hoping to find fodder for a new project celebrating regional roots music by Northern Appalachian women. One resource I found is a book called “Never Without a Song: The Years and Songs of Jeanie Devlin, 1865-1953” by Katherine D. Newman (forward by Alan Lomax, of course!) We’re working on arrangements now and hope to have some new songs to share soon. We’ll keep you posted!

We recently performed at the “Standing For Standing Rock” benefit at Unblurred on Penn  Ave.

We met lots of great folks, heard terrific music and more importantly, helped raise some funds for an important and powerful struggle to protect our environment.

Remember this event? We had a great time, singing out for Pete Seeger
